Learn to Make a Natural Dye Rainbow
Learn to make a rainbow using natural dyes! In class, we will work with Indigo, Weld, and Madder, as well as different mordants, to create a full range of colors. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have built your own natural dye color wheel and gained the skills to keep experimenting on your own.
This class is for dyers of all levels. For beginners, it is an excellent introduction to a solid foundation of natural dye materials, techniques, and practice. If you are a seasoned dyer, I'm sure you will learn something new as well.

What we'll cover
In this class, I’ll be guiding you through the process of creating a rainbow using natural dyes. We will dive into indigo dyeing, learning the steps to mix, work with, and maintain an indigo vat. You'll also learn how to properly prepare and mordant your fibers for dyeing, as well as work with primary color natural dyes to achieve limitless hues. We will also go over post-mordanting to further develop your rainbow.
Along the way, you will learn:
- How to mix and work with a natural fructose indigo vat
- Fabric preparation and mordanting
- Overdyeing with indigo, madder, and weld
- Post-mordanting with iron
- How to make a rainbow on a single piece of fabric
By the end of the class, you'll have the skills to make your own natural dye rainbows, maintain your indigo vat, work with natural dyes on your own, and more.

Do I need dyeing experience?
No, this workshop is friendly to all levels-- beginners to savvy dyers.
What materials do I need?
Those who opt in for a dye materials kit will receive a kit with indigo, mordant materials, and yellow and red dyes. All participants will receive a materials list and set up instructions, as well as a pre-recorded video to mix your indigo vat.
What type of indigo vat are we using in class?
This class will teach this method with a natural fructose vat.
What type of mordants are we using in class?
We will work with aluminum and iron based metal salts.
What type of fibers does this method work with?
Any natural fibers will work, from silk to cotton canvas. I highly recommend going to a thrift store to find natural fiber clothing to dye! We will talk about dyeing both plant and animal fibers in class.
Will class be recorded?
Yes! Class will be recorded and the recording and chat will be shared with you at the end of each session.
When will the recording be shared?
I will email out the class recording at the end of each session, and you will have access to it on the cloud for 180 days.
I don't live in the United States. Can I still join class?
Yes! Sign up without a materials kit to join us. A materials list and set up instructions will be sent via email.
